What is Hypnobirthing and is it for me?
Two very common questions I'm asked are - 'What is Hypnobirthing'? and 'Is it for me?'
The simplest way to describe it is to say that
Hypnobirthing is a way of looking at how your thoughts and emotions have an effect on both your body and mind, and how having a positive mindset may help you to have a better birth experience.
It's important to say that using Hypnobirthing DOESN'T mean that you can't go for the option of an epidural, or that you must have a natural, drug-free birth - that will always be your choice. It's about realising that you can bring your baby into the world in a calm, gentle way, trusting your natural instincts and working with your body.
You might be wondering about the 'Hypnosis' aspect of Hypnobirthing, because you've seen stage hypnosis on TV. May be you worry about being made to look foolish, or that you'll be under someone else's control. I can reasssure you that there is no such thing as 'mind control' because if that was possible, then we would all be able to control other peoples' thoughts and actions! Obviously, that's not the case, and what you see on the stage is purely for entertainment purposes.
So, what exactly is hypnosis? It's a totally natural experience, just like a pleasant daydream, or when you're engrossed in a good book. We actually drift in and out of hypnosis many times throughout the day, so that our minds can have some 'down time'. However, in hypnosis, your mind becomes very open and receptive to positive suggestions, ideas, and changes to your mindset which will give you a great deal of benefit. Practising your Hypnobirthing techniques regularly is not only enjoyable -you might even find yourself drifting off to sleep - but it also helps to reinforce a feeling of confidence in your ability to give birth to your baby calmly and gently.
